Advocacy & Education is an approach to education that strives to enlighten parents and empower their advocacy. Our goals are to work with all parents of children with disabilities where needed and to present training for special education professionals on the parents’ perspective of IEP meetings. These goals will alleviate tension and anxiety often associated with developing relationships between parents and special education professionals during special education services.

My name is Dr. Aletha Ramseur, as a person in a wheelchair I have am an independent, hard working, woman with varied life roles.  As a wife, mother, teacher and community activist, I am constantly on the go.  Education has been the focus of my adult life. My teaching career began 30 years ago as a 5th grade teacher.   Four years later I began teaching middle school science and realized that that was my true calling.  Working with children is both mentally and physically challenging yet I thrive on the challenge.  Energetic approaches to teaching, community involvement, and education endeavors to improve teaching and learning dominated my work-life experiences. After embracing my disability, I realized that people with disabilities are very often demeaned.  Relationships personal, business and social are often compromised because of feelings of pity or just a shift in power.

Advocacy & Education’s objectives are designed to level the power structure between parents of children with disabilities and the special education professionals directing their special needs children’s education.  The Advocacy & Education’s objectives include:

  • Introducing parents to the basic special education process Under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
  • Teaching parents the importance of the Individual Educational Plan (IEP) process
  • Teaching parents that they are equal partners with educators in the education of students with disabilities
  • Teaching parents about the educational system, school policies and procedures and the IEP team process.
  • Coaching parents to take charge of IEP meetings because it is about the future of their child
